It protects both parents by giving both of them legally recognized parental status.  Second parent adoption guarantees that the second parent’s custody rights and responsibilities will be protected if the first parent were to die or become incapacitated. It is vital to undergo second parent adoption when traveling (even if it is a short trip) to states where gay marriage is not recognized or legal.
